VANCOUVER – A multi billion-dollar liquefied natural gas project proposed for B.C.’s north coast is inching its way through the environmental approval process.

Federal regulators say the 30-day public comment period for the Pacific NorthWest LNG project will begin April 2.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency says it’s now looking for feedback on the project’s environmental impacts and the company’s plans to deal with them.

An environmental impact statement published on the agency’s website last month predicts the project’s effects on air quality will not be significant, but it will increase the province’s greenhouse-gas emissions annually by more than eight per cent.

The company was one of four to be granted 25-year export licences by the National Energy Board in December, subject to final government review.

The Malaysian oil-and-gas company Petroas owns 90 per cent of the company, and last June its vice-president said it was prepared to invest between $9 and $11 billion in two LNG plants.
