ELECTIONS 2014: Vernon voters have their say

VERNON – Local residents are having their say on who they want as city mayors, councillors, school trustees and regional district representatives.

Many voters have already cast their ballots. Over the three days of advance voting, a total of 1,957 people cast their votes, up several hundred from the 2011 election. Those numbers suggest Vernon could improve voter turnout (8,872 people voted three years ago, or 30 per cent of eligible voters.)

There are five candidates in the running for Vernon mayor, and 14 vying for a councillor seat.

General voting day is this Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Vernon Recreation Centre, Ellison Elementary, and Vernon Secondary School. Voters are required to bring two pieces of identification, at least one of which includes a signature. Acceptable pieces of ID and further voter information can be found on the City of Vernon website.

Voters are encouraged to use the hashtag #ivotedvernon on Facebook and Twitter.
