Penticton workshop prepares candidates, electors for upcoming municipal election

PENTICTON – Penticton and area residents have a rare opportunity to find out more about local government and the role they can play in it, just in time for this year’s municipal elections.

Strategic Leadership Solutions will be hosting a pre-election workshop called Candidate Bootcamp and Citizen School on Friday, Aug. 31, starting at 6 p.m. at the Senior’s Centre, 2965 South Main St., according to an event post on the City of Penticton website.

The workshop, led by former Golden mayor Christina Benty, is intended to provide a discussion about leadership practices and how to support those that promote long-term sustainability, the city says. The meeting will also deal with the roles and responsibilities of local government and elected officials.

For those considering throwing their hat in the ring, the workshop will also cover considerations of running for office and what can be done to attract and elect the best people for the job.

The city says local government is a community effort requiring a team approach, and this community and candidate readiness educational workshop is a part of that.

Seating is limited, so RSVP by email at election@penticton.ca or call the city at 250-490-2400 for more details.

Municipal elections will be held across B.C. on Oct. 20.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
