STOCKHOLM – A Swedish football league match was called off during the first half Sunday after a Djurgarden supporter died following clashes between fans in the southern city of Helsingborg.

Police said the man was found “seriously injured” in central Helsingborg around 2:30 p.m. Sunday and was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Local media said the 44-year-old Djurgarden supporter had been hit in the head by an object after rival fans started fighting before the game.

The game between Helsingborg and Djurgarden was called off in the 41st minute with the score 1-1. Swedish media said angry Djurgarden fans started storming the pitch after word spread that the man had died.

This was the opening round of the Swedish league season, which runs from March to November.
