Toronto Blue Jays place closer Casey Janssen on 15-day disabled list

TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays placed right-hander Casey Janssen on the 15-day disabled list Sunday due to a strain in his left abdominal and lower back area.

The team also recalled catcher Erik Kratz from triple-A Buffalo.

Janssen was 4-1 last season with 34 saves and a 2.56 earned-run average. The 32-year-old reliever was limited at spring training this year due to shoulder soreness.

He made three pre-season appearances, allowing one earned run and four hits over three innings of work.

Kratz, who hit .400 this spring, was sent to the team’s minor-league camp earlier in the week after losing the backup catcher job to Josh Thole.

The Blue Jays will open their 2014 regular season on Monday at Tampa Bay.
