Sentencing for Calgary man for Stampede threats set for this week

CALGARY – A man who threatened to kill hundreds of people at last year’s Calgary Stampede is scheduled to be sentenced this week.

Patrick Deegan, who is 29, pleaded guilty in January to uttering death threats, possession of unauthorized firearms and two counts of breaching conditions.

Deegan sent an email to the Calgary Fire Department in May 2013.

In it he warned there was going to be a machine-gun attack at the Calgary Stampede and more than 1,000 casualties.

Police found two improperly stored semi-automatic rifles and one hunting rifle at his parent’s house.

The prosecution wants Deegan be sentenced on Thursday to three to five years in prison, while the defence is requesting probation.
