Wesleyan creates scholarship honouring ‘Hamilton’ stars
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wesleyan University has established a scholarship honouring alumni Lin-Manuel Miranda and Thomas Kail, the creative forces behind the Broadway smash “Hamilton.”
The school announced the Wesleyan University Hamilton Prize for Creativity on Wednesday.
The four-year, full-tuition scholarship will be awarded to an incoming student who submits a creative written work judged to “best reflect originality, artistry and dynamism.” Miranda and Kail will serve as honorary chairmen of the judging committee.
Miranda is the show’s star and creator. He says he hopes the prize will help other young writers get their start. Kail directs “Hamilton” and says he’s delighted the school is “encouraging young people to persevere as writers.”
Kail and Miranda graduated from Wesleyan in 1999 and 2002, respectively.
The hip-hop-flavoured “Hamilton” has won 11 Tony Awards, including best musical.
