Top-ranked Serena Williams upset in Charleston, losing to No. 78 Jana Cepelova

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Top-ranked Serena Williams has been ousted from the Family Circle Cup, shocked in straight sets by Jana Cepelova of Slovakia 6-4, 6-4.

The 20-year old Cepelova is ranked No. 78 in the world.

Williams, who was looking for her third straight Family Circle crown and for her third title of the season, was behind 0-5 in the first set with only 18 minutes gone in the match in Charleston. She rallied, winning four straight games surrendering only six points and it looked like Cepelova’s lead would be short-lived.

But Cepelova came back and, holding serve in the final game, was able to win the set.

Williams said after the match that she needs a few weeks off where she doesn’t think about tennis and can regroup.
