Chinese actor’s apology to wife after rumours of infidelity breaks online record in China

BEIJING, China – A Chinese actor’s apology to his actress wife following rumours of his infidelity has set a record in China’s version of Twitter for number of comments and retweets.

Wen Zhang posted a statement around midnight Monday after days of online rumours that he had had an affair with an actress. He wrote that his wife, Ma Yili, “and the children could have had a warm and nice life, but everything was destroyed by me.”

By Wednesday, his post had been forwarded more than 1.2 million times and received nearly 1.9 million comments.

Xinhua News Agency says the combined number of retweets, comments and “likes” is a new record for the Twitter-like site Sina Weibo. Calls to Sina Weibo’s media office weren’t answered.
