Nominations open, candidates stepping forward in race for Penticton council seats

PENTICTON – The race has begun for a new city council in Penticton.

As the nomination period for the Oct. 20 municipal elections opened, retired businessman John Archer announced his candidacy for city councillor last night, Sept. 4.

Archer, 67, has lived in the South Okanagan for 21 years. He is running on a platform of public safety and protection of Penticton’s green spaces.

“If elected, I will be part of the process to enhance and protect our beautiful city,” Archer says.

Karen Louise Brownlee, Isaac Joseph Gilbert and Lynn Kelsey have put their names forward, according to the City of Penticton website, which lists those who have filed nomination papers.

None of the them have previous council experience.

City of Penticton Mayor Andrew Jakubeit announced his intention to seek re-election in late May, while Coun. Helena Konanz recently announced her intention to run as South Okanagan – West Kootenay Conservative candidate in the 2019 federal election.

Coun. Max Picton said today he is still undecided, while Coun. Campbell Watt says he plans to run again.

Couns. Judy Sentes said she intends to run again, while Coun. Andre Martin said he would not seek re-election.

Penticton businessman Jason Cox also announced he would seek the mayor's chair in August.

Penticton Councillor Tarik Sayeed said yesterday he would not be seeking re-election.

“It has been my honour to serve as a City Councillor and work with very talented, capable and genuine people,” he said in a press release issued late yesterday, adding he has recently accepted a management position with Coast Capital Savings and expects to be travelling extensively.

The nomination period for British Columbia’s municipal election campaign began yesterday and runs until Sept. 14 at 4 p.m.

Advance polls will operate on Oct. 10, 13, and 16, with general voting day on Oct. 20.
