Crown asks for delay in B.C. hockey coach sentencing as new complainant steps up
KAMLOOPS, B.C. – The sentencing for a Kamloops, B.C., hockey coach who sexually abused a player has been delayed after the Crown told the court another complainant has come forward.
Heidi Ferber, an assistant hockey coach for a Kamloops Minor Hockey Association girls’ team, pleaded guilty to sexual interference of a person under 16 and sexual exploitation.
Prosecutor Don Mann asked the court that the sentencing portion of the case be reopened based on allegations against Ferber from 13 years ago, when she was a teacher.
Mann told the court that the allegations weren’t sexual in nature, but involved an inappropriate relationship with a pupil.
Defence lawyer Michelle Stanford argued against reopening the hearing, saying the allegations are dated and not criminal in nature.
B.C. Supreme Court Justice Hope Hyslop is expected to release a decision on the request to reopen the hearing later today.
