Former MLA draws fire in legislature for using B.C. crest on letterhead

VICTORIA – He’s no longer a member of the B.C. legislature, but Harry Bloy was the centre of attention during question period in the house on Wednesday.

New Democrat member Selina Robinson told the house Bloy has used his provincial crest on his business letterhead.

Bloy was a member of the legislature between 2001 and April 2013, serving as social development minister and minister responsible for multiculturalism, but didn’t run in the last election.

Robinson noted that the provincial laws are clear, and only the lieutenant-governor, a member of the executive council, an MLA, or a judge of the supreme, county, or provincial courts can use the crest without the premier’s permission.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone says the protocol office and government lawyers took action as soon as the issue was brought to their attention.

Stone says Bloy has removed the material from his website and has provided assurances that he won’t use provincial emblems on any other material.
