Kamloops man in custody after allegedly barricading himself inside his home

KAMLOOPS – A Kamloops man is in hospital after allegedly barricading himself inside his North Shore home last night and making threats.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in a news release the man called a crisis line at around 9:30 p.m. yesterday, Sept. 10. He allegedly threatened violence to himself and to police if they attended his home.

Police arrived at the home and established a perimeter around it, Shelkie says. An RCMP negotiator made phone contact with the man but he refused to leave his residence. Neighbours were asked to shelter in place for safety.

The Southeast District's Emergency Response Team attended and at 3:45 a.m. today, Sept. 11, the man was taken into custody. Shelkie says the man is now being assessed at a local medical facility.

The 43-year-old man was previously known to police, and it's not known at this point if charges will be laid.
