Ron MacLean’s Kelowna life lesson

KELOWNA – Former Hockey Night in Canada host Ron MacLean has spent almost every summer in Kelowna over the years, so returning to the city for the Hometown Hockey tour on the weekend was kind of like coming home.

In an essay published on the Hometown Hockey website, MacLean reminisces about a life lesson he learned about gratitude one summer in Kelowna.

MacLean says in the essay it was in 1980 and he was 20-years-old, visiting with his girlfriend Cari who later became his wife. They’ve been married for 30 years.

They were in the Capri Mall parking lot when he hit a pedestrian with his car. He says he was about to turn left into a parking spot, but spotted what he thought was a better spot and hit the gas. The woman was bruised but otherwise all right.

Maclean says he is grateful the victim survived unscathed and the incredible comfort provided by the RCMP officers at the scene.

“For me, gratitude is the most tear-inducing emotion,” he says.
