Kamloops RCMP crack down on drivers who don’t slow down and move over

KAMLOOPS – Police are reminding motorists to slow down and move over when they see an emergency or maintenance vehicle with flashing lights.

Kamloops RCMP issued 15 tickets on Thursday, Sept. 13 after drivers failed to slow down or move over for a police vehicle conducting traffic stops on the East Trans-Canada Highway, according to an RCMP media release.

“Most of these drivers claimed they did not know about the law,” Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in the release. “This violation ticket is a $173 fine and three penalty points.”

Police would like to remind the public that motorists must slow down and move over when they see an emergency or maintenance vehicle which includes either police, ambulance, fire vehicles, tow trucks or any type of road construction vehicle.

Drivers must slow down to 70 kilometres an hour in an area with an 80 kilometre or more speed limit, or must slow down to 40 km/h in a zone with a posted speed limit of under 80 kilometres an hour, police say.
