Leon’s Furniture ordered to pay former employee $8,000 for racial discrimination

HALIFAX – A human rights board of inquiry in Nova Scotia has ordered Leon’s Furniture Ltd. (TSX:LNF) to pay a former employee $8,000 in damages after finding she was teased and racially discriminated against by her co-workers.

The board says Garnetta Cromwell experienced 10 incidents of racial harassment while working as a sales associate at Leon’s Furniture in Halifax.

It also says Cromwell faced excessive and ongoing discipline for workplace infractions at the store, while being discouraged from applying for management positions.

The 73-page decision says she was teased and called racially charged names, like Sunshine, Contessa and Condoleezza Rice.

Cromwell, who declared bankruptcy and took a medical leave after the incidents, says she feels justice has been served.

No one from Leon’s Furniture was immediately available for comment.
