Cyprus police discovers largest cocaine haul
NICOSIA, Cyprus – A Cyprus police spokesman said drug enforcement authorities have discovered 156 kilograms of cocaine tucked inside the fuel tanks of three electricity generators, in what is believed to be the largest-ever haul of the illicit drug on the island.
Andreas Angelides told the Associated Press Thursday that the cocaine-laden generators were initially shipped from a Latin American country and arrived in Cyprus via several European countries.
Their final destination appeared to be another European country.
Angelides said Cypriot agents made the discovery at a bonded warehouse near Cyprus’ largest port of Limassol after a tip-off from the law enforcement authorities of another country.
Cypriot authorities haven’t ruled out that some quantity from the haul may have been destined for the local market.
