VICTORIA – Criminal Justice Branch officials are meeting today with the families of the victims of a Prince George, B.C., sawmill explosion that killed two workers and injured two dozen others.
The meeting revolves around the branch’s decision on whether charges will be laid in connection with the April 2012 explosion and fire at the Lakeland Mills sawmill.
In February, WorkSafeBC recommended regulatory charges under the Workers Compensation Act.
The explosion at the mill killed 43-year-old Alan Little and 46-year-old Glenn Roche and occurred months after a similar incident in Burns Lake that also killed two workers and injured 19 others.
Charges were also recommended in the Burns Lake explosion, but those fell through, due in part to a flawed investigation by the provincial workers compensation agency.
Earlier this month, WorkSafeBC levied more than $1 million in fines and fees against Hampton Affiliates, the owners of the Babine Forest Products sawmill in Burns Lake, B.C.
