VANCOUVER – Head coach John Tortorella didn’t pull any punches when trying to explain why the Vancouver Canucks missed the NHL playoffs this year.
Tortorella says the Canucks are getting old and need an influx of young, skilled players.
He adds that it’s time for Vancouver fans to forget about 2011, when the Canucks came within a game of winning the Stanley Cup.
Tortorella is also taking some blame for the Canucks’ tailspin, saying he failed to continue teaching the team when it began to flounder.
After a promising start to the season, Vancouver finished with a 36-35-11 record for 83 points, leaving them 25th overall in the 30-team league.
The Canucks’ poor season has already cost Mike Gillis his job as Vancouver’s president and general manager. Tortorella says he’s scheduled to meet new president Trevor Linden later in the day and agreed there’s a chance he also could be fired.
