Storm overturns up to 30 recreational vehicles in Mississippi city

GAUTIER, Miss. – Authorities say a storm packing powerful straight-line winds has overturned up to 30 campers in the coastal Mississippi community of Gautier.

The Sun Herald reports that the storm toppled the recreational vehicles at around 8 p.m. Monday.

Police Capt. Jerry Cooksey tells the newspaper that emergency responders are going from trailer to trailer looking for anyone trapped or hurt.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths.

National Weather Service meteorologist Robert Ricks says straight-line winds of about 80 kilometres an hour overturned the RVs and that none of them were tied down. He says the weather service doesn’t believe it was a tornado.

A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect in advance of a strong cold front.
