Environmental affairs head gunned down in Brazil

SAO PAULO – Police say gunmen have shot and killed the head of environmental affairs for the small city of Altamira in Brazil’s northern jungle state of Para.

An Altamira police officer says two men on a motorcycle gunned down Luiz Alberto Araujo Thursday night as he drove up to his home. His wife and two sons were in the car and were unhurt.

The two gunmen fled after pumping seven bullets into Araujo’s chest and head.

The police officer spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk with the press. He said Friday that the motive for the killing was unknown.

Local media reports say Araujo had received death threats because of his efforts to stop deforestation in the region.
