Thumbs down for Kelowna medical marijuana application

KELOWNA – Kelowna City Council will decide Monday whether to support an application to allow a medical marijuana processing facility on agricultural land in Glenmore.

City staff is recommending council say no to Marlys Wolfe’s proposed 4,800 square foot building on 11 acres of land off Rifle Road near Longhill Road.

“This use, produced in this manner, is only permitted in several industrial zones,” staff’s report to council states.

In 2018, the province ruled that cannabis can be grown on land within the Agricultural Land Reserve only if it is grown outdoors in a field or in a structure that has a base consisting entirely of soil. 

This application is for a building with a concrete foundation to be built in an existing parking lot where the product will also be processed, package and stored.

An application was first filed with Health Canada for a medical marijuana license in 2013.
