Canadian skier and former world downhill champion John Kucera retires
CALGARY – Former world downhill champion John Kucera is retiring from skiing.
The 29-year-old from Calgary won the men’s world downhill title in Val d’Isere, France, in 2009.
But a broken leg suffered later that year kept him out of the 2010 Winter Olympics and sidelined him for three seasons.
Kucera got back on his skis in the fall of 2012. He didn’t compete in this year’s Winter Games in Sochi because of a severe inner ear condition that make racing impossible.
Kucera won three World Cup medals during his career, two of them in Lake Louise, Alberta.
He was the first Canadian to win at Lake Louise in 2006 when he took gold in the super-G.
