Hungarian novel, Italian poem collection win $20,000 prizes for best translation

NEW YORK, N.Y. – A Hungarian novel about art and creativity across space and time and a collection of surreal Italian poems have won prizes for best translated books.

Laszlo Krasznahorkai’s (krahs-na-HOAR’-kayz) “Seiobo There Below,” translated by Ottilie Mulzet (oh-TILL’-ee mull-ZIT’), won in the fiction category for the Best Translated Book Award. The author’s “Satantango” was last year’s fiction winner.

The poetry prize was given to “The Guest In the Wood,” written by Elisa Biagini (bee-uh-GEE’-nee) and translated by Diana Thow, Sarah Stickney and Eugene Ostashevsky.

Authors and translators will share $20,000 in prize money donated by Amazon.com. The awards were announced Monday by Three Per cent, based at the University of Rochester and an online resource for international literature.
