Son of Central African Republic ex-president detained

BANGUI, Central African Republic – Central African Republic’s justice minister says United Nations officials have detained the son of a former president and handed him over to the country’s authorities.

Jean-Francis Bozize, whose father was toppled in 2013, returned to the country Wednesday.

Justice Minister Flavien Mbata said Friday Bozize returned to meet with President Faustin Archange Touadera and presented himself at the U.N. mission to signal he was back.

Bozize has sanctions against him on accusations he helped finance the Christian anti-Balaka militia.

Central African Republic has been rocked by violence since March 2013 when a largely Muslim alliance of rebel groups overthrew President Francois Bozize. The rebel leader left power in 2014 and a horrific backlash by the anti-Balaka against Muslim civilians followed. Thousands were killed and sectarian violence has continued.
