Ken Hughes says no coronation for Jim Prentice in Alberta Tory leadership race

EDMONTON – The only declared candidate so far in the Alberta Tory leadership race says there’ll be no coronation if former federal cabinet minister Jim Prentice enters the race.

Ken Hughes says pundits may have already dubbed Prentice the front-runner, but leadership races are crucial to building parties.

Hughes says he expects his name to be there if a second ballot is necessary in the September vote.

A source close to Prentice says the one-time Calgary MP is putting a leadership team together and will announce his candidacy soon.

Hughes stepped down as Alberta’s municipal affairs minister to run to replace Alison Redford, who resigned last month.

He says he will conduct a grassroots campaign and tour the province in his pickup truck to get the word out about his long experience in business and politics.
