Oliver hunter rescued after ATV accident

PENTICTON – An injured hunter is safe today, thanks to the efforts of Penticton Search and Rescue.

The Penticton unit was notified shortly after 2 p.m. yesterday, Oct. 17, of an Oliver hunter who needed medical assistance after his ATV overturned.

It was believed the 65 year old had suffered a fractured leg. The search and rescue team were able to locate the man with the help of Keremeos RCMP, who were able to find him using the man's cell phone signal.

The incident occurred in the mountains east of Oliver. Once located, the hunter was airlifted back to Penticton where he was transferred to an ambulance.

His injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

Penticton Search and Rescue spokesperson Randy Brown said in a press release issued last night, Oct. 17, the early afternoon timing of the incident worked in the search and rescue team’s favour in that there was sufficient daylight to allow use of a helicopter to rescue the man.

Brown says those using the back country should have a plan and tell others what their intended schedule is. Travel with a buddy, carry a GPS and a signalling device, and be prepared with warm clothing and food and water when using back roads, especially during shoulder seasons when hypothermia can be more of an issue.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
