An Australian company called Surf Lakes has been developing a machine that can turn a controlled body of water, like a lake, into a wave pool for surfing.

The developers saw that surfing is a highly desirable activity, yet limited in terms of participation, the Surf Lakes website says.

The company says this prototype is meant to produce a variety of waves that resemble ocean waves.
