Yukon Quest leaders Sass, Moore reach final checkpoint

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – A former champion of the Yukon Quest reached the final checkpoint Sunday and was expected in Fairbanks on Monday afternoon.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports Brent Sass of Eureka is leading the 1,000-mile (1600-kilometre) race that started in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.

Sass won the race in 2015.

He pulled into the Two Rivers checkpoint at about 7 p.m. Sunday with 14 dogs, the most a team can have.

Sass and 2018 champion Allen Moore were leading the race. Moore reached Two Rivers about 90 minutes after Sass.

After a mandatory eight-hour rest, they faced a 70-mile run to the finish line in downtown Fairbanks.
