Czech FM: country remains opposed to EU migrant-sharing plan

PRAGUE, Czech Republic – The Czech foreign minister says his country is not ready to change its resistance to taking in refugees, a thorny issue in the European Union.

The European Commission has launched legal proceedings against the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland for failing to take in refugees under the EU’s legally binding sharing plan.

French President Emmanuel Macron backed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel accused the nations of betraying European values by refusing the program.

After meeting his German counterpart Sigmar Gabriel, Lubomir Zaoralek said Saturday his country’s position is unchanged.

Gabriel said it was important for him to get better understanding of the Czech stance. He added that a key question is what the EU is to do to effectively stop waves of refugees who are heading for Europe from Africa.
