Lee Daniels drama, Spielberg series set for next season on Fox; NBC also announces 2 shows

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Fox says it’s ordering TV series from filmmakers Lee Daniels and Steven Spielberg for the 2014-15 schedule.

Fox said Tuesday that Daniels, the director of “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “Precious,” is the writer, director and producer for a series called “Empire.”

The network describes it as a family drama set in a hip-hop empire.

Spielberg is among the producers of “Red Band Society,” with an ensemble cast starring Octavia Spencer. Fox says the series is an unconventional drama-comedy about teenagers that’s set in a hospital pediatric wing.

Also Tuesday, NBC announced a new sitcom for next season, “Marry Me,” starring Casey Wilson and Ken Marino as apparently star-crossed lovers. NBC also ordered a spy drama, “Allegiance.”

The announcements precede next week’s presentations to advertisers of networks’ fall schedules.
