TORONTO – The Tragically Hip’s tour is coming to an end next week, but don’t necessarily assume the band is finished with music.

At least that’s what guitarist Rob Baker hinted Thursday on his Twitter account in response to a fan’s message.

Baker emphasized the rock band has “never said anything” about hanging up their instruments as lead singer Gord Downie faces incurable brain cancer.

The comment came after the fan tweeted Baker saying he would be delighted if the Hip dropped a bombshell revelation at their Kingston, Ont., show on Aug. 20, which is widely regarded as Downie’s swan song.

“Nothing would make me happier than (the Hip) dropping a ‘we never said anything about this being the end’ bomb in Kingston,” tweeted someone with the username OilersJunkie.

Baker came back with a cryptic suggestion there’s more to come. He didn’t offer any further details on whether that would be more shows or a studio album.

The Hip is a notoriously private band that typically rebuffs interview requests and chooses to stay out of the limelight when they’re not on stage.

Downie and his bandmates haven’t spoken to the media since his diagnosis was revealed in a news conference earlier this year, but some have assumed the Kingston stop will be not only a symbolic end to the tour, but a literal finale for the band.

The Hip have five more stops on their “Man Machine Poem” summer tour — two shows in Toronto (Aug. 12 and 14), Hamilton (Aug. 16), Ottawa (Aug. 18) and Kingston.
