Spike belt eventually stops South Okanagan pickup thief

PENTICTON – Penticton RCMP deployed a spike belt to stop a vehicle thief in their tracks yesterday.

Police were notified of a stolen pickup truck yesterday, Nov. 6 around 2 p.m., travelling south to Penticton from Summerland, according to an RCMP media release.

Plainclothes officers saw the truck near Red Wing Resort on the north edge of the city and attempted to deploy spike strips, but the suspect was able to avoid the spikes by driving into the West Bench area, police say.

Officers and a police service dog unit located the vehicle travelling onto Penticton Indian Band lands and another set of spike belts were deployed.

These ones were successful in blowing out the stolen pickup’s tires and the suspect was arrested, but not before continuing up Green Mountain Road on the deflated tires until she could no longer continue.

The 24-year-old woman was held on charges of possession of stolen property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of a controlled substance, flight from police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

She has a court date scheduled for tomorrow Nov. 8.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
