Official: at least 1 killed, 19 hospitalized after explosion and fire at Turkish coal mine

ANKARA, Turkey – A Turkish official says at least one miner was killed and 19 others have been hospitalized following an explosion and fire at a coal mine in western Turkey.

Other Turkish news reports say many more miners are trapped in the mine on Tuesday, although the numbers vary in the reports.

Local administrator Mehmet Bahattin Atci told the state-run Anadolu Agency that 20 people were rescued from the mine in the town of Soma and one of them died in the hospital.
