Air quality advisory issued for Vernon

VERNON – High concentrations of fine particulates have affected the air quality in Vernon.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, in collaboration with the Interior Health Authority, has issued an Air Quality Advisory for Vernon and Lavington which is expected to persist until there is a change in current weather conditions.

Persons with chronic underlying medical conditions should postpone strenuous exercise until the advisory is lifted, a media release says. Staying indoors and in air-conditioned spaces helps to reduce fine-particulate exposure. Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have diabetes, and lung or heart disease.

The North Okanagan is sitting at an Air Quality Health Index of five, or "moderate." Go here for updates.

Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

You can limit exposure to air pollution by avoiding source emissions, where possible, such as on busy roads or heavy traffic areas.
