Malaysia central bank urged to reopen probe on indebted fund

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Malaysian opposition lawmakers have urged the central bank to reopen its investigation into indebted state investment fund 1MDB that is under being probed in several countries for money laundering and implicating Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Some 30 lawmakers staged a protest march Thursday from Parliament to the central bank, holding up a banner that read “Love Malaysia, hate kleptocracy.”

The U.S. Department of Justice earlier this year begun efforts to recover more than $1.4 billion in assets that it said were bought with funds stolen from 1MDB . It says most ended up in the hands of Najib’s family and associates. Najib denies any wrongdoing.

Opposition leader Wan Azizah Wan Ismail says the central bank must reopen its probe based on evidence in the U.S. court filing.
