Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna misses win over Dodgers with strained groin

Toronto Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna missed Friday night’s 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers with a strained groin.

Reliever Drew Storen took the mound in the ninth instead of Osuna, earning his second save of the season despite loading the bases.

“His groin flared up on him,” said Toronto manager John Gibbons. “The doctor said that if he can get through the night, maybe a day, hopefully we’ll see about a second day, because if it gets more aggravated he’s going to be down for a while.”

Osuna impressed in his rookie season with the Blue Jays last year, earning 20 saves and striking out 75 in 69 2/3 innings of work. He has six saves so far this season in 13 innings with 14 strikeouts.

Storen has 97 career saves, 95 of them coming over six seasons with the Washington Nationals before being acquired by Toronto in a trade this past off-season.

Osuna told reporters through a translator that he strained his groin while walking on Thursday and that he played catch before Friday’s game and it felt well enough to pitch.

“I was ready today, so tomorrow I should be fine,” said Osuna.
