Penticton mobile home park asking council to approve deer cull

PENTICTON – Penticton’s fledgling city council will have a controversial subject to ponder at its meeting next week.

Robert Cartwright of Figuiera's Mobile Home Park will present his case for a deer cull in the park at a city council committee meeting on Nov. 20.

In a presentation prepared for council, Cartwright says deer are grazing on anything they can find in the mobile home park at 321Yorkton Ave. He says many of the deer are injured, or have ticks and diseases. They have become so habituated to the park, which is fenced on three sides, resident’s yards have been rendered unusable because of the amount of deer feces left behind by the animals.

Cartwright says of the 117 residents in the mobile home park, 96 are requesting an immediate solution to the issue, citing costly destruction to flowers, gardens and trees, in addition to concerns about personal health and safety.

He says deer proofing has not worked noting a provincial report outlines the justification for a deer cull in addition to providing details for how it could be carried out.

“The only thing missing at this point is the participation of our city council,” Cartwright says, calling the issue “an excellent opportunity for the city to get involved on a low risk basis."

Cartwright will urge council to approve the cull and begin the process as soon as possible.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014.
