Li, Giuffre make up Canada’s two-player badminton team for Rio Olympics
TORONTO – Michelle Li, a fourth-place finisher at the 2012 London Games, and Martin Giuffre will represent Canada in badminton at the Rio Olympics.
Li is Canada’s most successful female player. She’s ranked No. 19 in the world, is the reigning Canadian champion plus a Pan Am Games and Commonwealth Games champion. The 24-year-old from Markham, Ont., finished fourth in London in women’s doubles with former partner Alex Bruce.
Giuffre, from Calgary, is ranked No. 76 in the world.
“These Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be an outstanding platform for both our young athletes from Canada,” Badminton Canada president Anil Kaul said in a release. “While we witnessed dominant performances by both of them throughout this year, the depth of the competition at the Olympic Games will be a benchmark for both Michelle and Martin who will compete at the highest level of international badminton competition.”
Canada is sending a team of approximately 314 athletes to Rio.
