Explosive device found in Osoyoos residence

OSOYOOS – Osoyoos RCMP found an explosive surprise while investigating a weapons call in the community over the weekend.

Sgt. Jason Bayda said in a press release police, including the dog services unit from Penticton, responded to a report of a man pointing a firearm and threatening a victim at a residence located in the 14000 block of 97 Avenue in Osoyoos on Nov. 24 around 5:10 p.m.

While investigating the incident a search of the residence revealed unsecured loaded firearms as well as an improvised explosive device and charging cords.

Police secured the residence until members of the RCMP’s explosives disposal unit could attend from the Lower Mainland. They removed the device and charging cords from the residence and disarmed them.

RCMP do not say if a suspect was arrested.

“I am very proud of my officers and the members of the disposal unit who unselfishly put themselves in harm’s way to ensure these explosives were found and disposed of properly. There is no doubt these officers saved the young children who also live in the residence from serious harm or death, had the explosives detonated in their presence,” Bayda said in the release.
