Rio protesters take to streets against austerity measures

RIO DE JANEIRO – More than 1,000 demonstrators are again in the streets of Rio de Janeiro to protest austerity measures planned by the Brazilian state’s government. Many are state workers who have been unpaid for weeks.

Federal and local policemen have deployed in front of the Rio state legislature to block any attempt by protesters to enter. Military police clashed with protesters at the same place last week.

State legislators are struggling to agree on a plan to deal with a deepening financial crisis.

In addition, two former Rio governors have been arrested this week in connection with corruption and vote-buying allegations. And incumbent Gov. Luiz Fernando Pezao is facing growing pressure to resign.
