Exit polls predict 6 seats for Germany’s new euroskeptic party in EU parliament
BERLIN – Exit polls by German public broadcaster ARD predict a strong result for the country’s new euroskeptic party in elections for the European Parliament.
ARD reported that Alternative for Germany received about 6.5 per cent of the vote according to figures released after polling stations closed at 6 p.m. (1600 GMT).
If the result holds true, it would give Alternative for Germany six of the country’s 96 seats
The polls showed Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative bloc receiving 36 per cent of the vote, 1.9 per cent less than in 2009.
Merkel’s centre-left coalition partner, the Social Democrats, were predicted to take 27.5 per cent of the vote with Germany’s Green party getting 11 per cent and the Left Party 8 per cent.
Changes to Germany’s voting law mean fringe parties are expected to win European Parliament seats.
