Man charged in Vancouver-area hockey mom’s death to appear in court today

SURREY, B.C. – A man charged in connection with the slaying of a 53-year-old Vancouver-area hockey mom is due to appear in court today.

Twenty-seven-year-old Yosef Jomo Gopaul is facing a second-degree murder charge.

Police say the suspect had moved to B.C. from Ontario eight weeks before Julie Paskall was killed.

She died in hospital Dec. 31 following an attack in the parking lot of a arena in Surrey days earlier.

Paskall had gone to pick up her son, who was refereeing a minor hockey league game.

Her death rattled the community near Vancouver and prompted some residents to demand the city and police do more to keep them safe.
