Man found not criminally responsible for stabbing death of B.C. woman

NANAIMO, B.C. – A man accused of the stabbing death of a woman from Gabriola Island, B.C., and the attempted murder of her son has been found not criminally responsible for his actions.

A court has ruled Jason Cramer not criminally responsible because of a mental disorder for the death of Elaine Schwartz and her son, Trevor.

The woman was stabbed 30 times during the attack in August 2011 and her son was left with permanent injuries.

Cramer’s lawyer, James Wright, says his client’s case will now be handled by the B.C. Mental Health Review Board.

Wright says Cramer will remain in custody until the board decides he’s no longer a risk to the public.

The court ruling said Cramer had mental health problems and abused drugs and that he took crystal meth on the day of the stabbing. (CKWV)
