Heavy wind, equipment failure knock out power in Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Malfunctioning equipment and heavy winds have knocked out power to nearly 115,000 clients across the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico.
The island’s Electric Power Authority said Tuesday that an unspecified problem at one of its power plants has affected more than 100,000 customers. Officials said another nearly 15,000 clients are without power because of wind gusts of more than 30 mph (50 kph) that have buffeted the island since Monday.
The outages come just months after an island-wide outage that lasted a couple of days and was blamed partly on aging infrastructure.
The power company holds more than $9 billion in debt and has struggled to update its infrastructure.
