Online brochure tells lodge visitors aboriginals have ‘intolerance’ for alcohol

WINNIPEG – A northern Manitoba fishing lodge is under fire over its visitors guide that says aboriginals cannot handle alcohol.

The brochure, which is posted online, tells visitors to the Laurie River Lodge not to give alcohol to its aboriginal guides under any circumstances.

It says Cree guides are wonderful people but, quote — “like all native North Americans, they have a basic intolerance for alcohol.”

M.K.O., a group that represents First Nations across northern Manitoba, calls the comments untrue, offensive and derogatory.

Grand Chief David Harper says the lodge must remove the comments and apologize.

No one at the lodge was immediately available to comment on the phone or by email.

Harper also says the Manitoba government should look into the matter.
