Puerto Rico unveils population tracker on new govt website

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Puerto Rico has launched a U.S. Census-based statistics website that features a population tracker updated every minute using information from the local and federal governments as well as projections.

The Spanish-language website was unveiled Wednesday as the U.S. territory continues to lose tens of thousands of people a year amid a decade-old economic crisis.

The tracker shows that some 3.4 million people remain on the island. A record 64,000 Puerto Ricans have left the U.S. territory each of the past two years, the highest number reported in a decade.

The website also contains data on housing, business, employment and other areas. It was developed in part by Puerto Rico’s Institute of Statistics, which collaborates with U.S. Census Bureau officials.
