Opposition activist released in Venezuela

CARACAS, Venezuela – Opposition lawmaker Timoteo Zambrano has announced that a jailed activist who has been involved in an effort to force a vote on President Nicolas Maduro’s rule has been freed.

Zambrano late Friday reported the release of Gabriel San Miguel, who is a national of both Venezuela and Spain. He and another man were arrested on June 19 in the central state of Cojedes after being picked up with cash and packages of pamphlets that authorities said they “could not justify.”

International human rights groups expressed concern about the arrests of San Miguel and fellow activist Francisco Marquez. It was not immediately clear if Marquez was freed as well.

Both men were associated with Popular Will, an effort to force the government to hold a referendum on Maduro’s presidency this year.
