Search finds freighter canoe carrying six children in northern Quebec
HALIFAX – A search and rescue official in Halifax says all eight occupants of a freighter canoe reported missing off the northern tip of Quebec have been found in good condition.
Lt. Edward Stansfield says the group of two adults and six children, ranging in age from four to 14, was spotted by a Hercules aircraft on land about 32 nautical miles northeast of Kuujjuaq just before 1 a.m. today.
Stansfield says the aircraft dropped supplies to the group which was later met by police in the area.
He says the group has resumed its trip.
Stansfield says it’s not clear if the “detour” the group made was to avoid bad weather in the area of Ungava Bay.
The group, from Kangiqsualujuaq, headed out in their canoe on Saturday, bound for Tasiujaq on the west side of the bay and a search was mounted after they failed to arrive at their destination on Monday.
