Kamloops city council asked to apply for grant for wildfire prevention measures

KAMLOOPS – The Community and Protective Services department is seeking Kamloops city council's authorization to apply for a $265,000 grant to support wildfire preventative measures.

The total project cost of treating over 45 hectares of high-risk interface areas is $365,000, according to the grant application. If successful, the grant will be combined with $100,000 in funds from the existing Civic Operations budget.

"If we combine both those funding streams then we have opportunity to do more within the community," Kamloops Fire Rescue Chief Michael Adams says.

The wildfire preventative measures include fuel mitigation, so thinning and spacing some in forested areas on municipal properties and crown land, as well as community engagement.

"We can only [prevent fires] with the cooperation of the citizens of the city of Kamloops and we look forward to that partnership," Adams says.

See the city's webpage on ways to implement preventative measures on your property.
